At AXR Napa Valley, winemaking is rooted in both history and innovation. Set on a historic pre-Prohibition estate in St. Helena, the winery honors Napa Valley’s rich agricultural heritage while embracing a forward-looking vision for exceptional winemaking. Every bottle reflects a belief that understanding the past is essential to shaping the future.

Conceived by its founding partners in 2015 and established at the historic V Madrone estate in 2017, AXR is guided by renowned winemaker and partner Jean Hoefliger. The winery takes its name from the historic AxR1 rootstock, whose influence, and ultimate failure during Napa Valley’s phylloxera crisis, forever changed the region’s approach to viticulture. Rather than viewing that history as a setback, AXR celebrates it as a reminder that resilience, adaptation, and continual innovation are at the heart of great winemaking.

Cabernet Sauvignon serves as the cornerstone of the portfolio, complemented by a diverse collection of vineyard-designated wines sourced from both the estate and some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Drawing on decades-long relationships with growers, Jean Hoefliger crafts each wine to express the individuality of its vineyard while balancing power, elegance, and precision.

From meticulous farming to thoughtful blending, every decision is guided by a commitment to site expression and craftsmanship. The result is a portfolio that honors Napa Valley’s remarkable history while showcasing the diversity, character, and enduring spirit of its world-class vineyards.
